Apple released two new 30 second iPad commercials during primetime last night. The two commercials focus 300,000 plus apps available for the iPad and feature the tagline “With over 300,000 apps, iPad is up for anything you are.”

Both commercials begin with words rapidly appearing on screen and suddenly stopping on a selected word with a chorus of people shouting out the word. The commercials then showcase a number of apps being used before new words begin to cycle across the screen and the process begins again.

Some of the popular iPad apps featured in the two commercials include: Amplitube, Style.com, Garageband,TED,iMovie, iBookstore, Toca Hair Salon, Vimeo, iBooks, iPhoto, FaceTime, Glow Hockey 2 HD, Dinosaur Zoo, Endless Alphabet, Solar Walk -3D Solar System, Ultimate Sharks, Rockmate and Heart Pro III

Both TV commercials showcase apps being used on Apple’s new iPad mini and the larger 4th generation iPad.

These new iPad commercial are faster paced then previous iPad TV ads and are in some ways reminiscent of Apple’s earlier high-energy iPod and iPhone commercials.

The boyscouts pretty much nailed it when they coined the motto “Be Prepared to DJ.” And Swedish headphone manufacturer Urbanears wants to make that possible with Slussen, an audio jack splitter and app combo.

The setup includes a narrow profile splitter for simultaneously connecting headphones and a sound system to your iOS device, plus an app for the actual beat dropping. Urbanears seems to have its heart set on people specifically using Slussen at after-parties, you know because it’s “the most powerful after-party weapon known to man” and all. But you could easily use it in your car or with a portable speaker.

The splitter costs $15 (though the red one is $20 for some reason), comes in four colors and can hang on a keychain. Meanwhile, the Slussen app has standard effects like BPM control, equalizer, scratching and crossfade, plus it allows pre-listening. And best of all it’s free so you can use the app with any splitter you already own. [Urbanears via Werd]

Does Anyone Actually Want a Transparent Phone?

There are a couple of rumored features that “phones of the future!” always seem to have, and up there with flexibility is transparency. See-through phones have been a futuristic what-if for ages now, but now a company called Polytron is promising that the future is here! Or at least close. Within the year, perhaps.

Sure, it’d be impressive, but it just raises the question: why? Is there any really good application for a transparent phone? Even if there is, would it ever be useful for the average Joe, expect maybe if he wants to keep tabs on the palm of his dominant hand? Can you think of super-crazy-awesome application I’m missing? Would you really want one of these? Would anyone?

This week, ubiquitous middle-shelf bourbon Maker’s Mark announced that it would be watering down its whiskey from 90 proof to 84 proof in order to meet demand. Not surprisingly, everybody freaked out. That’s dumb. Here’s why.

It’s Friday afternoon, you’ve made it through the long week, and it’s time for Happy Hour, Gizmodo’s weekly booze column. A cocktail shaker full of innovation, science, and alcohol. What percent more am I going to have to drink?

In Cocktails and Mixed Drinks, That Drop Makes No Difference.

Nine out of ten Maker’s drinkers would never notice the difference between an 90 proof and an 84 proof version. It’s not because they lack a sophisticated palate, either. It’s because the overwhelming majority of people drink Maker’s on ice, with soda, or in a cocktail. All of these methods of consumption have been adding water to the mix already. That’s not an unfortunate byproduct. It’s Flavor 101.

Alcohol burns your tongue, overwhelming your tastebuds with pain. When the alcohol is diluted you are much more capable of detecting its subtle flavors. Dude-bros may howl at this, but it’s true. Even scotch, a drink for purists, is traditionally served with water. Yes, in Scotland. In fact, this tradition dates back centuries. After the failed Scotish rebellion of in the late 1600s, Scots were required to toast the King of England when they drank. Instead, they would raise their glasses over the water on the table. That way when they said, “To the King,” they were really saying, “To the King over the water,” referring to the Stuarts living in exile.

Personally, I like my scotch neat, or with maybe a drop or two of water, but by and large, that’s not how Maker’s is consumed. It’s not a sipping whiskey. So, really, the only people it will affect will be bartenders, who will have to add slightly less mixer (again, we’re only talking three percent here), or shake/stir the drink for a slightly shorter amount of time. If Maker’s on the rocks is your drink, it will just be like the ice was put into it 30 seconds earlier. Customers definitely wouldn’t notice the difference in a cocktail.

It’s Already Too Late for Maker’s Mark

Bourbon-making is a slow process. The fermentation and distillation all happen over just a few days, but bourbon must then be aged a minimum of two years in new, charred wood barrels until it hits somewhere in the neighborhood of 130 proof. Once it’s done maturing, the distilleries add water the until the solution has the proof you see when it’s bottled on the shelf (typically 80 proof, or 90 proof for makers, some “cask-strength” editions go up into the mid-hundreds, though). This is the stage where the extra water has been added to increase the distillery’s output.

But if you’re furious about Maker’s Mark changing it’s flavor, sorry, you’re already too late. In recent years, again, in an attempt to meet demand, Maker’s Mark shorted its barrel-aging process. Traditionally, the spirit was left to age in barrels for nearly seven years, but not long ago they lowered it to under six. That barrel-aging is where bourbon gets its color and i’s smokey, woody flavors. Taking a year off the process absolutely alters the amount of flavors a spirit could inherit from the wooden walls. So they’ve already bucked tradition.

Better Alternatives

Yeah, it’s a matter of opinion, but now might be a good time to remind you that you’ve always been able to do better than Maker’s for the money. Bulleit, for instance, generally costs a few bucks less, is almost as easy to find as Maker’s, and has a much more complex flavor profile. For most mixed drinks, for bourbon on the rocks, and even for sipping neat, Bulleit outguns Maker’s pretty handily.

Unfortunately, Maker’s Mark has become such a well-known brand that you end up paying a premium for the name. It ain’t worth it. There are a lot of better whiskies than Maker’s that cost the same, and if you’re willing to go up in price, the sky is the limit. Don’t think of this is the end of your affair with Maker’s Mark. Think of it as the beginning of a whole new world of whiskeys just waiting to be explored.

In case you felt like the Armageddon simulation we’ve been living in wasn’t realistic enough already, Congress’s Science, Space, and Technology Committee will soon hold a hearing “to examine ways to better identify and address asteroids that pose a potential threat to Earth.” Cue Aerosmith.

This morning’s meteor explosion in Russia resulted in more than 900 injuries, making the fact that the hurtling space rock was undetected by any Earth-based telescope more than a little disconcerting. Couple that with a close call to a 150-foot-wide asteroid in less than 24 hours, and it makes sense that an effort is being made to, at the very least, create the appearance of attempting to address the situation. In the announcement made by Committee Chairman Lamar Smith (R-Texas):

Today’s events are a stark reminder of the need to invest in space science. Developing technology and research that enable us to track objects like Asteroid 2012 DA14 is critical to our future. We should continue to invest in systems that identify threatening asteroids and develop contingencies, if needed, to change the course of an asteroid headed toward Earth.

Fortunately, the chances of you or a loved one actually being hit by a projectile from above are absurdly small, so there’s no need to erupt into mass hysteria just yet. You can save that for February 5, 2040, when the next great threat to Earth may or may not pass us by, and we’ll see if these hearings actually produced anything of use. [Cnet]
