Best Free iPad Apps

WWF Togther iPad App

One of the best things about using an iPad is all the great apps that we can run on it. There are excellent apps for just about any purpose you can think of. Better still, there are lots of great free apps for the iPad. Our Best Free iPad App of the Week posts highlight these apps.

This week’s pick is WWF Together, by World Wildlife Fund. This is a simply beautiful app that helps support and promote a wonderful organization. Here’s a slice of its App Store intro:

Experience the world’s most amazing animals in one app – together. This interactive experience brings you closer to the stories of elephants, whales, rhinos and other fascinating species. Discover their lives and the work of WWF in a way you’ve never seen before. Try out “tiger vision,” stay as still as the polar bear during a hunt, and chop the panda’s bamboo. New species stories – which you can fold and share with the world – are added regularly.

The apps interface is clean, light, full of interactive elements and fun to use. All its pages are beautifully designed, with strong typography and stunning imagery that tells the stories of a number of endangered species.

The endangered animals shown in the app are all magnificent creatures, including Giant Pandas, Marine Turtles, Elephants, Tigers, Bison, Snow Leopards, Polar Bears, and Whales. More featured animals are coming to the app in the next few months. It’s a striking reminder of how sad it is that these animals are endangered and how important the work of the WWF is.

The photos and videos within the app are just spectacular.

Here’s one I texted to my daughter, warning her that she might be affected by the Cuteness Overload:

The Sharing the Planet section shows a 3D interactive globe that gives you a look at 60 different endangered species around the world that the WWF are helping to protect.

There are also some cool, little-know animal facts shared throughout the app. The app also makes it easy to share its great content in a number of ways – including this fun one that kids should love:

Origami of each animal that folds up, creating an animated video you can share with your friends and family through Facebook, email and Twitter – plus, download instructions for making your own origami.

And of course the app offers a page that shares multiple ways you can support the WWF and get involved with their admirable efforts.

I love this app for a number of reasons – not least because my 9 year old daughter has been fascinated by animals of all types since she was tiny, wants to be a vet when she grows up, and will adore browsing through it.

This week’s pick is Letterpress – Word Game, a great new word game from Loren Brichter, creator of the superb and hugely popular Tweetie Twitter client app for iPhone. Tweetie was eventually bought by Twitter themselves and Brichter was the lead developer on the official Twitter apps for iOS and Mac. Now he has left Twitter and created this new word game for iPad and iPhone.

Letterpress is one of those apps you just know you’re going to like moments into using it. It’s got a light, clean, colorful and inviting interface and the game itself is easy to understand and fun to play.
