PetziConnect

Connected gizmos for dogs are having a moment, thanks to the likes of FitBark and other canine activity trackers. But here’s a connected gadget designed for dog owners to interact with their pet, rather than keep tabs on its health. Indeed, overuse of the PetziConnect’s treat dispenser feature may require some kind of health monitoring tech so push the treat button with caution.

Fortunately PetizConnect has other functions, that do not rely on treats to make pet and pet owner happy. Specifically it includes a wireless HD camera and a microphone so that pet owners can remotely summon Fido from his afternoon snooze and then watch as he cocks his head quizzically, wondering why his master’s voice is coming out of a box plugged in the wall.

As well as letting pet owners remotely view and coo at their dogs, and reward interest in a disembodied voice with the occasional tangible treat – dispensed via a button in the Android or iOS app or via a web client – the PetziConnect lets them take photos and record video. Which does, incidentally, beg the question how secure are Petzila’s systems – since once the device is up and running you will have a wireless, Internet-connected eye peeking into your home. Still, it’s designed to be plugged in at dog height so its view of any larger home occupants is probably going to be pretty partial. (Uhh, unless they happen to be rolling around on the floor nearby…)

Petzila was seeking $30,000 via Indiegogo to get the first batch of its connected dog-treating gizmo manufactured but has already passed that goal, with 40 days still left to run on its crowdfunding campaign. PetziConnects – which it says are rugged enough to deal with being mauled by a frenzied Fido hoping to get more treats/liberate its owner from inside the box – are due to ship to backers in December. The current lowest price-tag for crowdbackers wanting to bag a device is $99.

Update: Here’s what a Petzila spokesman had to say on the security point: “PetziConnect is built upon a 128-/256-bit encrypted, proprietary transport layer that blanket secures our three Petzila modules – Portal (mobile or web), Cloud, PetziConnect. In layman’s terms, we built the system bottoms-up to be end-to-end bullet proof secure.”

MetaTrader 4 iphone app

MetaTrader 4 iPhone app

MetaTrader 4 is the most used software by traders to manage their trading accounts in the world. Its popularity is mainly due to implementing useful and easy to use functionalities that simplify the trading processes for experience traders and traders who are just starting out. The success of MetaTrader 4 has lead the developers at MetaQuotes Corporation to develop a mobile application for the iPhone or iPad which can be downloaded for free from iTunes store.

Some functionalities of the MetaTrader 4 are: managing accounts; setting up automated online trading; market monitoring in real time; full set of trade orders; viewing complete trade history; placing orders directly from graphs; and much more. More notably MetaTrader 4 is connected with over 1000 brokerage firms which becomes very useful for individuals who want to use a broker to assist them in their trading.

Another notable feature, particularly to new traders is the “demo account” which gives new traders the opportunity to set up a mock account to practice with and learn the technical tools available in MetaTrader 4, without fear of making a mistake.

Most recently MetaQuotes Corporation has released a new version. MetaTrader 4.0.437, the newest version, has solved errors from the previous version that lead to the application crashing in certain specific situations. This version can be downloaded for free from iTunes Store.

Janet Balis Headshot

Betaworks has hired former Huffington Post Media Group publisher Janet Balis as its chief revenue officer.

The New York technology studio – which owns and develops varied media-focused companies, such as social news aggregator Digg, news-saving app Instapaper and the hugely popular Dots mobile game app – has been girding its efforts to monetize its portfolio, said Betaworks CEO John Borthwick.

“Phase One of Betaworks was building great companies,” he said. “And Phase Two is really building Betaworks as an operating media company.”

Balis left her job at the AOL-owned HuffPost in May, after a year-long stint. She has also worked at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Time Inc. and Newsweek.

In an interview, she noted that there was ample opportunity to knit together tech and data to serve advertisers better.

“There is a thread of social discovery for brands to think very creatively and strategically, and Betaworks properties are well positioned for that,” said Balis. “We have to think differently to bring those brands into the process.”

Betaworks has been searching for a CRO to work on a common monetization effort that it could apply across its many platforms, said Borthwick.

“We have been trying to tie together and figure out all the places we could monetize, and it surprised me how well it has gone with some early efforts,” he said.

Borthwick pointed to a partnership effort around Dots with industrial giant GE, which sponsored a new game mode called Gravity that was made available free for a week. The native ad implementation garnered 30 games played and 172 million views, he said. Later – due to its popularity – Betaworks rereleased the Gravity mode within the game, for $1.99.

Borthwick said that to help develop more such ideas with marketers, the company had also hired James Cooper as its head of creative, to “explore creative opportunities for Betaworks products and to help tell the Betaworks brand story.”

Cooper was previously at the production company Tool of North America, and has worked on a number of well-known digital advertising initiatives, such as the “Help I Have the Flu” Facebook app.

banjo-app

Social discovery app Banjo has evolved into something quite different from where it started, and that’s a very good thing. The mobile app used to essentially just surface relevant social connections and activities nearby, but it has since harnessed all the data it was gathering to become an event and breaking news detection engine so powerful that many new organizations now use it. It’s putting a little of that magic back into the consumer app today with version 4.0.

Banjo powers a surprising amount of live social content seen on major television networks like NBC, FOX and the BBC, and founder and CEO Damien Patton explained to me in an interview that it can actually predict events and breaking news before they hit Google or anywhere else – public social signals collected in real-time through Twitter and other networks start to ramp up quickly whenever anything important goes down, and Banjo’s tech is excellent at spotting and surfacing that stuff early.

“We look at all these social signals in real time, so what we’ve built is the largest collection of social signals in the world,” he said. “It’s organized by three things: Time, location and context. So now we’re able to curate and index (and that’s the important thing, indexing) breaking news and events faster than anyone else.”

The release of Banjo 4.0 today reimagines the consumer-facing version of the company’s product with that in mind. Patton says this release focuses on “The Live Internet,” and redesigns the interface to help make it easier for users to search for events by keyword and find both live events, as well as archived ones, which can then be viewed as if they’re unfolding right now.

Patton says this is the best way for customers to recapture and relive important past experiences they shared with the rest of the world, in addition to being a great tool that journalists and other organizations can use to curate and distribute real-time information about a big story. Others like Toronto’s ScribbleMedia are doing a similar sort of thing with curated content pages with dynamically updated content, but Banjo’s focus is geared more towards televised and traditional news media organizations.

The consumer app launching today doesn’t expose the full power of Banjo’s event identification and discovery engine, as Patton says that kind of firehose would be unnecessarily overwhelming for the average user. But eventually, the aim is to democratize access to the kind of breaking news coverage Banjo is providing to big media organizations.

“The big vision is giving everybody an all-access pass,” he said. “We want to give people a taste of when in the future they can go to any event they want to live.” As currently implemented, Banjo presents a curated collection of events from around the world for users to check out, and it’s also a pretty great way to step back through time and relive the tense moments when major headline-grabbing happenings went down.

The new version of Banjo is live now on both iOS and Android, and is a free download for both platforms.
