The third installment of the Infinity Blade trilogy has been a long time coming. We thought we would see its release sometime during iOS 6’s lifespan, but the app had been postponed nearly to death. Last week, Apple showed off Infinity Blade III at its iPhone event with a promise that it would launch alongside iOS 7. Well, the game’s developer has made good on its promise. Infinity Blade III is now on sale in the App Store.

“It’s been amazing to see the continued success of Infinity Blade and to have the ability to tell a complex story across different mediums, using a single device we take wherever we go,” chAIR’s Creative Director Donald Mustard said. “We’re so proud of Infinity Blade III and feel it not only offers a powerful finale to the series, but also gives mobile gaming another giant push forward.”

The new game (64-bit on iPhone 5s) promises fantastic iOS touch controls, tap-to-move navigation, a dynamic 3-D world, two different characters to play, and more. You be able to invite allies to join your adventure in The Hideout. Meet up with the Gemcutter, the Potionmaster, the Blacksmith, and the Merchant to unlock new skills and strengths for your fighter.

You’ll be able to choose a variety of game paths, find new quests, play side missions, and fight in a group setting. Battle enemies as Siris the hero or Isa the rogue. Team up with players from around the world for group-based “ClashMobs” where you can unlock rare treasures and earn exclusive items.

Bonus features include detailed story cutscenes, voice talents from John Noble and Troy Baker, the animated “Infinity Blade: Origins” short film, and the in-game debut of “Monster,” a new song from Imagine Dragons.

Urban Dictionary defines epic fail as, “Complete and total failure when success should have been reasonably easy to attain.” So I find it ironic that Epic Games’ sure-fire hit, Infinity Blade: Dungeons has been beset with delay after delay. After all, it’s not often one of the most successful iOS game franchises has such an eagerly-anticipated game waiting in the wings that they just can’t seem to get to market. Now, we have word from Epic Games we shouldn’t hold our breath for the release of what certainly looked like another great chapter in the Infinity Blade saga.

One year ago, I first wrote about a promising new game from Epic Games called Infinity Blade: Dungeons. It was a prequel to the award-winning Infinity Blade storyline. We were treated to a preview of this latest chapter in the Infinity Blade series during the launch of Apple’s third generation iPad in March. It wasn’t the first time Apple picked an Infinity Blade game to showcase the awesome power of iOS gaming. With Apple’s support, what could go wrong?

Though Epic Games initially designed Dungeons, they handed the project over to a new division know as Impossible Studios, made up of a group of former employees of Big Huge Games. Then came the delays. I was sure the new game would come out within a few months of its preview back in March 2012, then six months passed.

I began to hear exciting rumors the game would be available before the year’s end; some pundits in the gaming community even suggested Epic Games was timing the release with that of the iPad mini back in October 2012. Yet that day came and went too.

Fast forward to today, and it’s almost been a year since Epic Games announced its upcoming game. Just this week, Epic Games founder Tim Sweeney announced:

We’re closing Impossible Studios … When former members of Big Huge Games approached Epic last year, we saw the opportunity to help a great group of people while putting them to work on a project that needed a team. It was a bold initiative and the Impossible folks made a gallant effort, but ultimately it wasn’t working out for Epic. This means that Infinity Blade: Dungeons is now on hold as we figure out the future of the project.

This sad news came courtesy of MacRumor, surfacing just as I was wondering when Infinity Blade: Dungeons would finally see the light of day. I must say I was surprised to hear this, since I felt Dungeons was a guaranteed award-winner.

In the meantime, if you are looking for your dungeon crawler fix, at least there are some great options in the App Store, available free of charge. While Epic’s Infinity Blade: Dungeons looked like it was set to raise the bar in its genre, both Dungeon Hunter 3 and Eternity Warriors 2 will tide you over until Epic figures out what it’s going to do with Dungeons. Hopefully it’s just a delay, not a cancellation. As of now, there’s no saying how this upheaval will affect the Infinity Blade series in general or any potential new releases. It’s been a long time since Epic Games has introduced a new chapter in the open-ended Infinity Blade storyline. Hopefully one way or another, that will soon change.
